The Reserve Bank of India has updated its Branch Locator - a link on its website containing the list of branches/offices of commercial banks. The link now has classification of branches/offices into various population groups with revised base population as per Census 2011. As mentioned in the RBI circular (RBI/2016-17/60/DBR.No.BAPD.BC.12/22.01.001/2016-17 dated September 1, 2016), the effective date for population group classification of centres as per Census 2011 is September 1, 2016.
The centres (village/town) where bank branches/ offices are located, are classified into four groups (Rural, Semi-urban, Urban and Metropolitan) based on its population as per the latest (2011) Census data. Related notes on tables on the branch locator as well as detailed guidelines used in identification of centre on the link (https://rbi.org.in/scripts/bs_viewcontent.aspx?Id=2035) have also been updated.
The Reserve Bank compiles these data on the basis of the information furnished by the banks in terms of its master circular on branch authorisation.
