Profile

The Reserve Bank’s operations in Ahmedabad began on February 02, 1950 with the establishment of a small cell called as "Note Cancellation Section". This cell was housed in the building of State Bank of India at Lal Darwaja till October 1970.

The operations kept on expanding with Exchange Control Department starting in 1962 from Bank of India building near Bhadra and Agricultural Credit Department in 1963 from the building of Ahmedabad District Co-operative Bank on Relief Road near Capri Hotel. The Department of Banking Operations and Development (DBOD) also started at Ahmedabad during 1966-1967. Subsequently, due to space constraints, all the Departments except "Note Cancellation Section" shifted to United Insurance building, Income Tax Circle, Ahmedabad.

In the year 1970-71, Reserve Bank of India, Ahmedabad except "Note Cancellation Section" started operating from La-Gajjar Chambers building. The Public Debt Office and the sub-office of Issue Department under Byculla office commenced operations from May 1, 1971 and Deposit Accounts Department from November 1, 1971. During 1974-75, the clearing house management was taken over from State Bank of India but it continued from SBI building till 1978 when the clearing house was shifted to Nanalal Chambers building and subsequently to La-Gajjar Chambers.

With the expansion of activities and the requirement of additional space, Reserve Bank of India, Ahmedabad started its full-fledged office in new building called Main Office Building(MOB) located near Gandhi Bridge on the banks of Sabarmati river from June 14, 1982.
